Drawing on centuries of Ukrainian statehood, thirty-five years ago we made our choice and became an independent democratic state. Independence means the freedom to be ourselves, to shape our own history, preserve our culture and traditions, and choose our own heroes.
Today’s Ukrainians continue the work of those who paved the difficult path that made this anniversary possible. The struggle for Ukraine’s right to exist as a sovereign, independent, democratic, social and law-governed state continues. In these circumstances, the conscientious and professional fulfilment of our duties by each of us is a responsibility we bear towards future generations.
Our deepest respect goes to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and to all those who defend our country and work tirelessly to sustain the vital functions of our cities. We will always remember those who have fallen in this brutal war.
We will prevail. We will secure a lasting peace, preserve our independence and rebuild every piece of land that has been devastated.
